Lazio Region.

A promontory of white houses on the Tyrrhenian, a harbour beneath a Saracen tower and, at the end of the beach, the grotto where the emperor Tiberius had his guests dine. Lazio begins at Sperlonga and climbs inland, where every August the abbey of Fossanova returns to the Middle Ages.

The coast between Terracina and Gaeta is the Riviera of Ulysses: the name comes from the places the Odyssey sets around here, which at Sperlonga have become a museum and a trail of murals.

The giant bench.

On top of the hill above the archaeological site stands an oversized bench, painted the blue of the fishing boats. You climb onto it the way you did as a child and look out across the gulf as far as the Pontine islands.

The medieval festival of Fossanova.

Every August, for three days, the village of Fossanova goes back to the Middle Ages around its Cistercian abbey: flag-throwers, bagpipes and minstrels, choirs, fire-eaters, merchants and innkeepers among the stone houses and the cloister.
