Festivals that come back every year on the same day and in the same squares, and that a whole town prepares for months. Shrove Tuesday in Frosinone, with its agave leaves and the French general burnt at the stake; August in medieval Fossanova, around its abbey.

The historic carnival of Frosinone.

On Shrove Tuesday Frosinone takes to the streets with the radeca, the long agave leaf that everyone waves above their heads. The festival recalls the town's revolt against the French troops in 1798-99 and ends at night, with the trial of General Championnet and his effigy burnt at the stake. Before that, the carnival opens from the balcony of the town hall, and allegorical floats and masks parade through the streets of the old town.

The medieval festival of Fossanova.

Every August, for three days, the village of Fossanova goes back to the Middle Ages around its Cistercian abbey: flag-throwers, bagpipes and minstrels, choirs, fire-eaters, merchants and innkeepers among the stone houses and the cloister.
